Though I'd argue there's a difference from emulating scorechasing games for offline play, instead of super competitive fighting games that need online play. They were likely contracted because to be blunt, their SNK 40th release was godly and critically acclaimed to be pretty much their best effort in general due to how hands-off they were from publisher limitations and just due to the fact the games included are all quality and play well.

To be fair, Digital Eclipse are pretty damn great at porting games for offline play and having museums full of history: The emulation for the games are all still rock-solid, it's just the online sucks, which is really annoying when this is the first time games like IV are playable online. But yeah, this collection definitely needs polish. They're absolutely amazing games that make me very glad I didn't yet VI be a bad first impression of the series, since I-III/VI are just not good starting points, but IV-VP, 2019, and the NeoGeo Pocket games are all fun entries that made me a fan of this series. It also kinda sucks that I just learned from playing I-III are awful games on the same tier as Art of Fighting 1/2 and World Heroes, since the AI loves to cheat in those a lot even on Level 1 and the controls are stupidly hard to pull off.īut I'm in HUGE love with SamSho IV and V-VPerfect. Like yeah, I can see images from SNK Gals Fighters and I can recognize the boxart and poster, but how will newcomers know what's the boxart, what was used for the keyart, etc etc? Overall, the core games are very well emulated offline, badly emulated offline, and the gallery feels incomplete. Now it just feels like a slideshow of images that could have been put on a Twitter account dubbed "SamuraiShoDownNoContext". No NeoGeo CD soundtrack, tournament videos are from the 2010s and way too tiny to watch (with no zoom option), and the lack of captions in the gallery is just a slap in the face for fans of the developer like me who loved their in-depth writeups in prior entries. The only things in the gallery worth noting are the character galleries (they DO all have bios that really help, so this feels a bit better-made), and the dev interviews, but outside of that a lot of it is very disappointing. I can't believe that SNK would allow them for 40th but not Sam Shodown collection.

What happened here? It literally doesn't feel like a museum if I'm not reading on history and just see a bunch of images with no context. This makes the bunch of prototype/unused character art in the game feel utterly useless without context, which just blows my mind considering the absurd development time for this compilation alongside the outstanding quality from their last compilation. To be blunt, this makes the gallery feel VERY half-assed and outta place compared to the outstanding depth of SF30 and SNK40's galleries where every major image and game was detailed with fun trivia and details: But in SS's gallery, it's just the seven core games getting a description (well-written, but still), and NONE of the images having captions at all. :| Pretty much this close to deeming the online trash tier altogether.Īlso asked one of the devs via a reddit thread why the gallery images lack captions, and he said they weren't allowed by SNK to really add many of them and there were constraints involved.

Apparently there was a patch yesterday, but I couldn't figure out how to install it? Still on 1.01. I keep getting disconnected from every match I find and I've only had one game in. Enjoyed it so far and have spent 8 hours on it, but by god the online is bad.
